DFW Metroplex Alternative Energy Caucus
The Abode of Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Green Initiative Advocates
Idealized for Google Chrome Web Browser - Revised 7/24/2010
You may already know that an environmentally friendly lifestyle and business
choices can actually
save large amounts of money, reduce one's cost of
living
as well as making you more competitive;      these green economies
also help one to reduce their carbon footprint which likewise are a
health
benefit for yourself and those beings and entities that you care for and claim
responsibility for. The goal, at this website, is to help you locate personally
useful information and resources that can help you to gain positive changes
in your personal, family lifestyle or
health and neighboring, municipal,
state, national and world wide use of our mutual environment in a manner
that also reduces your cost of living and the costs of doing business.
.
All of these shared insights on this Website incorporate
The Three Primary
Axioms of Green Economics; alternatively, these are insights as to how NOT
using these axioms are cost ineffective or which cause environmental waste.
If you are unaware of these axioms or want a short review,
please click here.
.
In addition, along with millions of other reasonably intelligent Americans, we
are concerned with the problem of diversity of supply which is being violated
by energy producers in the form of Russian, Middle Eastern and other global
suppliers who bear our country no good will and who are girding themselves
for ever greater economic leverage against the primary consumer of their
energy, the American Public.

Also, at one point, this bully pulpit was opposed to the production of Bio-fuel
from corn. The arguments was that it was definitely driving up the price of
gasoline additives in the form of alcohol and as a result of the competition for
market share would drive up the price of food. Years of
study of this
problem has obtained a reversal position on corn for Bio-
fue
l, after finding out that High Fructose Corn Sugar is directly linked to
Type 2 Diabetes. We are now encouraging our congressional representatives
to get behind the energy policy of mandating more production of corn for
Bio-fuel in order to drive the price of corn too high to use as cattle fodder
and sweetener in foods and beverages.
.
That is just one more reason why:
.
We're here to show you some of the savings nuggets and environmental
wisdom we have mined that can help you, your family, your associates and
others
$ave money while becoming more environmentally aware. Reduction
of your energy use may be too small a matter, in your mind, to be worth the
effort. Happily, we'll show you that the savings in personal expense and the
accumulative effect of "small" changes can be significant in terms of your
budget expenses and in weaning all of us off of the devastating effects that
foreign energy purchases are having on your cost of living.. Our belief is that
it is incumbent on individuals in our free society to personally make changes
in ones own areas of influence, based on timely, accurate, "how-to,"
knowledge.
.
Insights:
.
In Aug '08 G-M reviewed a series of video comments by several well known
environmental spokespersons. Below are snippets from three of these:
Graham Hill, founder of
Treehugger.com said, according to the Washington
Post's
Think Big video blog      sponsored by Vestas.  Mr. Hill said, "Just start
with something you care about, right now; rather than take the slow
approach to studying environmental issues by getting out a calculator or
delaying when you consider converting your lifestyle to a greener living style.
Just start by doing something that is important, to you. And, small is sexy...
50 years ago 1000 square feet of living space was adequate, now the
average is 2500 square feet, with less children, too. Converting a home to
living green is much less costly if one's home is smaller; if ones car is smaller
<
or lighter>; if one uses and has less to pay for and make do in ones life."
.
Michael Klare, a professor at Hampshire College, discussed the possibility of
<
both direct and indirect> resource wars.
.
Richard Braum, founder of
Virgin Investment Group, suggests finding
sources for renewable, non-carbon burning energy as the best way to go
green. "Dig no products from the ground for energy and produce no
products above ground that are carbon based, for ones sources of energy."
He also said that he gave some credence to a new, small group of climate
experts who consider our world already past the tipping point and climate is
already in a temperature warming beyond control spiral. He says that
humanity's only hope is to immediately move to a zero carbon footprint
economy and not waist any time meeting that goal.
.
Another
Think Big commentator was Alan Weisman who suggests that plastic
products and especially disposable plastic or paper bags should be outlawed
as give away free containers for shoppers that used to put all vegetables in a
single, reusable bag; now every item is in a free plastic or paper container.
.
Many lifestyle changes can free ones disposable income for other things. For
example: One can purchase and assemble an Adult electric battery powered
tricycle for doing local errands; E-Trike owners find that electric trikes can
make a major dent in their local suburban shopping expenses. With ranges
up to 30 miles, a trike made for local errands can replace a significant part of
one car's gas expense in a one or multi-car family. By charging the trike with
about five cents of electricity at night,
there is no negative affect on one's
electric utility company's night time coal burning load and the trike can be
used to do errands in town during the day, saving a couple of gallons of fuel
for the car every time it is used as a substitute for the car. With gas soaring
higher each day above $3.35 a gallon,
serious money can be saved. We
encourage everyone to realize that in todays fuel-cost environment that
electric transportation will also pay its way and then some, in terms of savings
of money in your pocket and in terms of environmental impact.
.
Currently energy's prices and environmental concerns are driving a
conversion of farmland to corn and Bio-fuel production and the cost of all
food staples while climbing rapidly is causing double digit inflation as we speak.
Meanwhile our leaders and those in power are whistling in the graveyard after
seeing the IPCC's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Report for
2007:
Summary for Policymakers results. If one follows their Bio-fuel
Scenario's on their stat charts, one sees that they don't stop runaway
climate warming any more than coal fired furnace stack scrubbers do. Only
Zero or negative carbon footprint scenarios show concrete positive results.
.
KC Golden of
TomPaine.com said, "We can start by squaring up to a simple
truth, fossil fuels are very costly. We pay some of the tab at the pump and in
our utility bills. But we pay much more in the form of chronic national
insecurity due to
dependence on oil. We pay in the form of climate
disruption—more intense storms, water shortages, ocean sterilization. We
pay through the nose, through our lungs and through our declining standing
in the world." Source:
.
The constructive, practical, personal solution to getting control of the cost of
the energy we personally use is to turn our attention to converting to low
energy use commodities, goods, products and services with the key being to
retrofit our consumption to energy efficient and cost saving items which do
no harm or much less harm to ourselves and the environment, in the
bargain... Acceptance of unvarnished truth is also a part of making these
changes. This is an area of thought requiring a separate directory of topics
and research. Please click here
for more food for thought about Bio-fuel
Studies and scams; methane/meat pollution; wind farm scams, etc.
.
Examples of the content there are: Results of studies that have shown that
corn to
Bio-fuel is actually using more energy than the fuel it makes.
Likewise, it is the major
oil companies that have pushed for tax breaks to
build wind farms in states such as Texas for cheap oil pump-jacking.
.
It is well past time for all of us to implement
REAL energy self-sufficiency or
some percentage of energy reduction and production on our own, via
solar or wind, zero emission autos or other alternatives waiting on the
shelves, as well. Adding appliances to our homes and businesses that convert
free solar and wind energy and adding a
fossil fuel-less or at least a truly fuel
efficient car to our multi-car family are simple decisions to accomplish this.
Doing it is a bit harder, but not impossible by any means. (
Toyota Motors for
example has finally relented to public pressure and in 2008 made its Prius Hybrid
available for general sales ,without a premium added to its price, in all showrooms in
the lower 48, not just in California. My wife and I recently saw a new one on a street
in
Irving, Texas with a local dealer plate frame on it in February.). While Detroit
is pondering whether gasoline will come back down enough such that they
don't have to build high MPG cars, several European and Asian Zero-E mega
MPG designs are premiering all over the world as we speak. I for one, hope
Metroplex municipalities will woo them to build these autos in plants
IN the
Metroplex. Inexpensive 100 MPG cars and pickups that use
compressed air
technology and gas are coming very soon to compete with these hybrids, as
well.
.
Changing to alternative renewable energy sources is not always all warm,
fuzzy, and nice (See left sidebar). Some individuals and groups in our
populace take umbrage to having "industrial energy companies," shoe
horning into their communities and lifestyles. With an eye toward fairness,
here is a link to our new, "
Renew/ables" page with links to information that is
not always flattering to those of use who encourage phase over to
alternative energy sources. Some of the up-front benefits to municipalities
that authorize development of alternative energy production facilities, might
be construed as bribes if anyone took municipal council deals with alternative
energy developers to court...
.
The
factoids and green-economic information published here and the links to
other environmental information and resources are yours to use in
any way
that you desire. This website is dedicated to sharing environmentally useful
information. There are directories to legislative measures and legislators, too,
should you desire to contact your elected officials and tell them your views
on
environmental issues of your own interest. Do not overestimate how
many constituents a legislator has to hear from to become a convert to your
viewpoint. They are very sensitive to how little of an ice burg shows above
the surface of their part of the pond...
Tell them to go green; who knows,
maybe they will finally do more than pay lip service and actually do it. wr

.
Plug In America promotes the use of plug-in cars, trucks and SUV's
powered by cleaner, cheaper, domestic electricity to reduce our nation's
dependence on petroleum and improve the global environment. It likewise is
the foremost tutor on the benefits that individuals and municipalities reap by
having grid-capable private and public service vehicles in their cities.

Green Metroplex Service and Sales practices safe and sane battery recycling
for the protection of the environment, as a public service.
.
Every part, wire and battery and even the dirt on a used or worn out E-
trike is
recycled, especially battery materials like cadmium, lithium, lead or
acid which are never sent to a solid waste landfill.
.
What we ask of you, a responsible citizen:
We encourage you to acquire and use recycling waste containers  at
home and at work.
.
Computers and Compact Fluorescent Lamps are hallmarks of our
time.
When they wear out it is incumbent on us all to take the extra
step of recycling these items at hazard waste disposal sites instead
of discarding them into the solid waste landfills. Hiding them in our
weekly garbage for pick up contributes to environmental suicide.
Please do your part to insure that the highly toxic metals and
chemicals found in these and other useful or very efficient and
necessary devices
do not wind up in our country's ground water
aquifer and fresh air
as a result of our negligence when they
are past their useful life.
.
In Addition:
.
We encourage you to always charge your E-vehicle or any electric
battery powered devices or contrivances
ONLY AT NIGHT, when
that practice will actually decrease your
Carbon Footprint. In
addition, please make a habit of unplugging or switching off energy
vampires at every opportunity. End.

In Lowville, NY an individual
in the citizen task group
appended to their city
council, which was involved
in negotiating their Wind
Turbine Utility deal said it
was, "The most demanding
experience of my life."  One
school superintendent said.
"I'm an educator, not a wind
expert or an investor." The
hardest part, was under-
standing the amounts of
money involved, trusting that
the community would get it,
and "the great unknown,
which is how much the wind
company is making."

<Wind Farm Investors
expect full payoff costs for
wind generators to be in the
neighborhood of 4 years;
while this does not state the
cost/profit ratio, it is strongly
indicative that the profits
from this free source of
energy are enormous and
are leveraged by subsidized
tax breaks by state
controlled Public Utility
Commissions..

Coal plants expect break
even in 8-12 years,
depending on how green
they are designed to be;
with quick, cheap and dirty
being the most favored.
Nuclear in 21 years due to
the safety factors built into
power plant construction
and operation and the cost
of nuclear fuel and spent
fuel disposal
(After about four
years, no nuclear plant ever
stops paying to have its spent
fuel stored safely).

Break even for current solar
cell energy harvesting,
connected to the
net grid is
around 8 years. The new
multi-junction solar cell
technology once in the
marketplace in 2009
estimates a four to six year
break even, due to the
recovery of initial
manufacturing plant
construction costs and
licensing of this new
material, as well. That
payback window will grow
smaller as more
manufacturing plants are
built and economies of
scale and competition for
market share begin to be a
factor.  (Opinion: In 2009
this industry has a good
chance of being the next
great Tech Bubble.). Ed.>
