| In Lowville, NY an individual in the citizen task group appended to their city council, which was involved in negotiating their Wind Turbine Utility deal said it was, "The most demanding experience of my life." One school superintendent said. "I'm an educator, not a wind expert or an investor." The hardest part, was under- standing the amounts of money involved, trusting that the community would get it, and "the great unknown, which is how much the wind company is making." <Wind Farm Investors expect full payoff costs for wind generators to be in the neighborhood of 4 years; while this does not state the cost/profit ratio, it is strongly indicative that the profits from this free source of energy are enormous and are leveraged by subsidized tax breaks by state controlled Public Utility Commissions.. Coal plants expect break even in 8-12 years, depending on how green they are designed to be; with quick, cheap and dirty being the most favored. Nuclear in 21 years due to the safety factors built into power plant construction and operation and the cost of nuclear fuel and spent fuel disposal (After about four years, no nuclear plant ever stops paying to have its spent fuel stored safely). Break even for current solar cell energy harvesting, connected to the net grid is around 8 years. The new multi-junction solar cell technology once in the marketplace in 2009 estimates a four to six year break even, due to the recovery of initial manufacturing plant construction costs and licensing of this new material, as well. That payback window will grow smaller as more manufacturing plants are built and economies of scale and competition for market share begin to be a factor. (Opinion: In 2009 this industry has a good chance of being the next great Tech Bubble.). Ed.> Link to Renew/ables Page |
