- Neighborhood Responsibility Anyone at any time can make a good example and affect positive change
|
My wife and I found out recently that we
can and do have a subtle influence on our
neighbors by simple actions on our own
part. The simple act of picking up a fresh
roll of our city solid waste disposal, recycle
waste bags, became an exercise in setting
an example that we noticed had a positive
affect on our neighbors, in the bargain...
The truth is, that we had lost interest in
recycling our waste every Wednesday,
which is our recycle waste pick-up day
each week. Once I realized how
irresponsible I was being about doing this
civic duty, I recanted and bought some
recycle bags when I went to the city hall to
pick up their cheap (but very strong) black
garbage bags. I just carried a semi-full
recycle bag out when I took out the trash
last week. At that time I scanned up and
down the street and noticed that none of
our neighbors had so much as a cardboard

box set out on the curb for recycling. Just the usual black trash bags. The morning garbage pick-up
came and went, and later as the recycled waste pick-up truck came by and they waved at me while
mowing my lawn with our new cordless mower I notice that across the street, one cardboard box
had been set out on the curb, which they also picked up. I forgot about it.
Today, I put out just one black garbage bag and a recycle container box and two semi-clear, light
blue city recycle bags to the curb with a little separation in between these two piles of waste. My wife
dragged a couple of dead tree branches to the recycle pile. When I glanced up and down the street I
was flabbergasted to notice that almost every neighbor in both directions, in line of sight, had two
piles of waste out to the curb (One garbage and one recycle waste.)! A couple piles sported recycle
bags, too, not just cardboard boxes with paper in them. I was astounded and later told my wife
about it after she returned from a checkup in town. She said that she had also noticed a change in
the waste at the curb around the corner and out to the main road, in our little property owners'
association enclosure.
Conclusion: Even seemingly small acts of ecological responsibility can cause real change in ones
neighborhood, without one word spoken about it, y'all!
