How to Build an Electric Vehicle
Conversion Instructions,
Associations and
where to find parts for an Electric
Vehicle
(Because Detroit and the major U.S. foreign auto
manufacturers cannot change their profit model.)
| This data
is primarily about conversion of stick-shift vehicles to EV's, on
the cheap. However, much of this same data can be applied to automatic front wheel carbon fueled drive vehicles one desires to convert into a hybrid vehicle, with motors attached to their rear wheels throttle powered by batteries for rear wheels only, to increase their overall mileage. Refer to the Hybrid Sources links if that is your interest. These are hands-on data for persons with existing expertise and tools used in the mechanical trades. |

| If
you want some assistance
in the conversion of your vehicle to electric or would like to learn
more about them from hands on owners, we advise you to contact
members of an Electric Vehicle Association. EVA members are inclined
to be glad to help others and learn from each other and, on balance,
they advance the development of electric vehicles. We do not have direct contact with the EV associations or parts vendors listed on this website and they do not have our endorsement by being listed in this index. |
For those of you who have a front wheel drive vehicle with automatic transmission, do not despair! We have seen front wheel drive mini-vans with direct mount rear electric motors that have taken advantage of the well in their rear deck where hide-away folding seats used to be stored; they were simply converted to hybrid vehicles by storing their undersized battery pack in the rear deck well. These hybrids are charged at night. When used for neighborhood errands at distances under 30 miles they obtain amazing gas savings. Most of the rules for building these hybrids readily apply to these vehicles as those that apply to the small vehicles with manual transmissions. Medium and full sized auto's have the extra weight carrying capacity needed to remake them into hybrids with heavy lead-acid batteries and a matched pair of <10 to 20 hp> DC motors on the rear wheels. | ||
