On July 14th I took our new
Neuton® rotary lawnmower on a
test spin in our yard. At first, I
confess that I was somewhat
apprehensive to put it to such
severe use. The grass had
flourished during the past month
during record rainfall in North Texas.
As the picture will attest, our grass
and the weeds that shot up like
fireworks displays all around our
yard were quite high, to say the
least..
The first grass cutting project was
done fairly early in the morning on
this particular Saturday. However,
the DB noise level was way down
from what one would expect from a
rider mower or our front wheel
traction drive gas rotary mower, as
well. At any rate, my neighbor did not
come bursting out of their house
and stalk to the end of their driveway
to pick up the morning paper all the
while glaring at me, as is the usual
practice when I cut the lawn early; in
order to beat the summer heat on a
given weekend.
In keeping with our practice of putting our money where our mouth is, at the beginning of the
month we put the 18 hp gas powered, rider lawn mower up for sale in the classified section
of the local newspaper. Our intent was to remove the noise, smoke and pollution from our
neighborhood and use cheaper electricity from the net-grid to power assist our grass cutting
chores. We sold the rider and used the proceeds to purchase a Neuton® cordless
battery powered lawn mower on the Internet. As luck would have it they had started a sale
recently so we got it at a deep discount and no shipping charges, either. A new sale has
since started, dropping the price a few bucks more!
.
Once the Neuton® arrived it proved to be a no tools assembly project. Actually the only
assembly was of the handlebar and plug-in controller cord. I found that one needed to move
the wheel height control lever to full travel in order to get the lower uprights to accommodate
the finger tightened flange bolts into their threaded sockets, but the assembly was whisper
smooth and easy, otherwise. Reading the directions before assembly is recommended,
mostly to become familiar with the parts, safety tips and proper operation of the mower.

As you can see from the above picture, the weeds and grass were tall in the back yard and out of control. They were wet from recent rains, as well. The Neuton® tore right in and cut them down to size.

As you can see from the series of
pictures on this page, the grass and
weeds were tall and rank.
These pictures were inserted to prove that the
Newton® was much more than barely up to
the task of cutting them, wet or not. I admit that
I was forced to cut less than full cut widths in
some places, in order to keep a high enough
blade speed to continue mulching, with the
discharge/mulch flap closed. Mulching the cut
grass is my preferred lawn care method.
.
My lawn's lush condition is normally the
source of many a neighbor talk-across-the-
fence-discussion about fertilizers and
watering patterns. The truth is, I always mulch
cut and water the lawn with drip irrigation,
instead of sprinklers for watering, which has
allowed me to water during the hottest
drought conditions without wasting water.
Fertilizer is rarely used in order to reduce the
pollution that it causes during rainy run off
days. Mulch cutting is the real secrete to my
lawn's lush look.
.
I was able to cut the steep slope on our back
lot, which tails off into a drainage ditch.
Normally I would have to just cut the more or
less level section there with a tractor wheel
rotary gas mower. Then get out the electric
weed eater to cut this steep and hazardous
section of our yard. However, the light weight
of the Neuton® made it possible to roll it
down the slope and pull back tor another cut.
.
Its low profile was another asset by way of
reducing the need of another tool to close cut
next to our sheds and skirting, as well.

This view shows a swath cut through the back yard weeds then I backed up and started using the low profile characteristics to advantage, so that later when using the weed eater, the chore will not be so long and drawn out.

This picture clearly shows just how rank and high our grass was after a record breaking rainy summer, during this test of our new Neuton® Cordless Lawn Mower

Evaluation:
.
I found the Neuton® Cordless Lawn Mower to be easy to assemble straight from the shipping
container. The instructions for assembly and its operational guidelines were clear and easy to
duplicate in the real world. Its size and weight with the battery installed made it relatively easy to move
about in my moderately sized but uneven yard; which includes a steep back portion where a drainage
ditch parallels my back yard. Its efficient shape allowed me to cut in close and even get under
overhanging sheds, which reduced the amount of weed eater follow up after rough cutting my lawn
with this hand push mowing tool.
.
During the initial cut of the summer it's battery came up about 200 square feet short of enough battery
capacity to finish the job; however I attribute this failure to the fact that my lawn was very rank and had
not been cut in several weeks due to headline making rain storms in this area at that time. Without
doubt, now that I know it can cut damp grass, I will cut my lawn more often, without concern or worry
that the battery will fade before the task is done.
.
I am delighted with this yard keeping tool and glad that I have removed gas powered mower pollution
and noise from my lifestyle and my local neighborhood while using less expensive domestic energy
from the net-grid utility and we only charge our battery devices at night, instead of using imported
fossil energy, to cut our lawn. It costs 3 to 5 cents per charge; so I've estimated that it will pay itself off
in energy savings in about 7 or 8 years.
.
I recommend the Neuton® cordless lawn mower to anyone with a moderately sized lawn, that
wishes to reduce the noise and pollution they produce while cutting their lawn. The easy to plug in or
remove string cutter accessory does away with the usual back strain associated with the use of a
string "Weed Eater," as well.

On August 6th, 2008 I added a string "Weed Eater" attachment and discovered that one can
edge or cut grass on the fly, by means of a rocker switch on the handle, as one moves along
with this vertical or horizontal string cutter tool plugged into the front of the mower body. One
unlocks the head using the pictured knob on the accessory and rotates the head by hand to
either a vertical or horizontal position for the string cutter.
<-- Note the yellow rocker
switch for sending power to
the string cutter or mower
blade motors.
